We practice to perform.
All great music education shares this principle - whether it’s private lessons, conservatory classes, or going on tour. Performing for others motivates us to improve. In the Piano Fluency Academy, you will prepare one clear assignment each month to perform for your peers. These performances take place in small, supportive breakout rooms as part of our monthly Studio Class. You’ll also receive helpful feedback from Ted - in Studio Class, Office Hours, and in the community forum.
Concepts are easy; fluency takes time.
Most adult students have an easier time with intellectual understanding than intuitive fluency at the instrument. This program is designed to get your hands on the piano with consistent practice over time, so that you can surprise yourself with newfound ease at the keyboard.
Essential skills transcend genre.
Maybe you grew up playing classical piano and you're getting interested in jazz. Maybe you're a hip-hop producer and you want to create your own keys parts. Maybe you love Joni Mitchell and Madison Cunningham and you want to write folk songs on piano.Â
Â
These are all examples of real private students of mine. What may surprise you: despite their widely varied musical goals, they all rely on the same handful of foundational skills at the piano. The Piano Fluency Academy focuses on these essentials in order to unlock your creative freedom: rhythmic coordination, inversions, and functional analysis. Learn the skills in this curriculum, then make music that’s unique to you.Â

Hi, I’m Ted, the creator
of Piano Fluency.
PROFESSIONAL ARRANGER | 10+ YEARS TEACHING
I live in Los Angeles and have a BA in Jazz Studies from the USC Thornton School of Music. I've recorded piano for Laufey, composed music for KFC and Carmax commercials, and written string arrangements for Eddie Benjamin, Ruel and Alina Baraz. If you have broad musical interests - I do too! You're in the right place.
As a lifelong pianist, I've learned that music doesn't have to be intimidating or complex. Join me in an online course and see for yourself that playing piano can be a joyful adventure.Â
